THE ASSOCIATION OF EUROPEAN JOURNALISTS CONDEMNS THE PROSECUTION OF THE ATHENS REVIEW OF BOOKS MAGAZINE

THE ASSOCIATION OF EUROPEAN JOURNALISTS CONDEMNS THE PROSECUTION OF THE ATHENS REVIEW OF BOOKS MAGAZINE

The Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, on 24th of July, the day for celebrating the restoration of Democracy in Greece, pushed for the confiscation of the revenues and  the bank accounts of Mrs. Maria Vasilaki, the editor of the monthly magazine Athens Review of Books, which is relevant with the international publication of New York.

Being an AEJ’s honorary member, ARB is under judicial prosecution since many years because it published its reader’s letter on which the current Minister of Foreign Affairs has been mentioned as “the most extreme and radical, hardcore communist of his generation, a real “Gauleiter” of Stalinism”.

Even though the case has been examined by the Greek Supreme Court and a written recommendation of its competent member was in favor of the acquittal of ARB, the political pressure led to its conviction.

That fact is considered as unacceptable by the Greek section of AEJ by all prospects for a democratic administration and for this reason denounces the case to the competent bodies of the European Institutions and the Council of Europe.
